SSF Awards Scholarships to 5 Promising STEM Students

Cohort two hails from Southern CT State College, Quinnipiac, University of New Haven



The Soderstrom Scholars Fund (SSF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports underrepresented students pursuing STEM degrees at Connecticut colleges, is pleased to announce the 2024 recipients of its scholarship. Five students pursuing STEM degrees at Connecticut universities were selected through a competitive process.


The second cohort of SSF scholars are:


  • Hannah O. Ashiru, a Biochemistry major at Southern Connecticut State University, is focused on advancing in molecular sciences and impacting biomedical research. 

  • David Gutierrez, majoring in Data Science with a minor in Mathematics at Southern Connecticut State University, seeks to influence the future of data-driven technology. 

  • Monserrat Martinez-Garcia, also at Southern Connecticut State University, is a Chemistry major with ambitions in analytical chemistry and environmental studies.

  • Abdourahim Mbengue, studying Computer Science at the University of New Haven, brings a fresh perspective to technology and software development. 

  • Karyme Verde Vigil, pursuing a degree in Behavioral Neuroscience at Quinnipiac University, aims to enter healthcare with a focus on mental health and forensics.


SSF provides support across three pillars: Mentoring, scholarships, and internships and training. The SSF Board of Directors and Advisory Council is composed of experienced leaders and innovators from academia and industry, including the Connecticut Department of Education, Yale, UConn, American Heart Association, BioCT, Connecticut Innovations, ConnCorp, and more. 


“These five exceptionally bright students represent the future of STEM in Connecticut,” said David Scheer, Board Chair of the Soderstrom Scholars Fund and President, Scheer & Company. “Their drive, academic excellence, and commitment to making a positive impact in their fields and communities inspire all of us. SSF is proud to play a role in their unique journeys, and I have no doubt they will go on to make significant contributions to science, technology, and innovation in our great state.”
